New NIOSH Study Reinforces Link Between Fire Fighting and Cancer

A new study conducted by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on mortality and cancer incidence in career fire fighters shows an elevated risk of several types of cancer - and of all cancers combined - compared to the general U.S. population.

The just-released study, published in the Occupational & Environmental Medicine, is among the largest examining cancer risk in career fire fighters, with a study population of 30,000 fire fighters in Philadelphia, Chicago and San Francisco.

The study identified higher incidence rates of cancers of the respiratory, digestive and urinary systems, which suggest that fire fighters are more likely to develop these cancers compared to the general U.S. population. The incidence rate of mesothelioma was two times greater among fire fighters compared to the general population, indicating likely occupational exposures to asbestos, the known cause of mesothelioma.

SAN RAFAEL, CA- Marin Professional Firefighters, IAFF Local 1775, will host a program for elected and appointed officials and candidates, as well as members of the media, known as FIRE OPS 101 October 8, 2013 in San Rafael.  This daylong program includes hands-on fire fighting and rescue operations under controlled supervision of Marin County’s professional fire fighters and paramedics.  Participants will learn exactly how challenging it is to keep our communities safe.

This workshop will demonstrate many aspects of fire and emergency medical service operations, from wearing the proper protective gear to actually fighting fires.  Participants will be confronted with multiple scenarios and given the opportunity to do what Marin’s fire fighters and paramedics face on a day-to-day basis.  Each participant will learn how to use self-contained breathing apparatus, essential to breathing in heavy smoke, as well as other tools of the trade including thermal imaging cameras and rescue tools.  Participants will also learn to battle a live fire and be given instruction on how to respond to unpredictable and dangerous events of fire behavior such as flashovers and building collapse.

FIRE OPS 101 is Tuesday, October 8, 2013 from 9am to 3pm at San Rafael Fire Department Station #2, 210 3rd Street, San Rafael, CA 94901.

Media outlets are invited to register a reporter as a participant in FIRE OPS 101.  However, space is limited and pre-registration is required as soon as possible by contacting Jason Hatfield at the above listed number.  Media and photographers who would like to attend but will not participate in scenarios are asked to contact Local 1775 for media credentials prior to October 8, 2013.
