John Jones

San Rafael Fire Department

Occupational Cancer

John R. Jones 1943 - 2008 On July 23, 2008, John R. Jones of Novato died gracefully of cancer on his own terms at home alongside his true love Kim, his wife. " His life goal was to be of service ," Kim explained. His first career of 34 years was for the San Rafael Fire Department where he served as firefighter, engineer, acting captain and emergency medical technician. " John was a class act, revered by everyone. He brought out the best in people ," according to Jeff Conover, Firefighter Association President. He was equally inspirational in his second career as a fitness instructor for older adults. And in his unexpected third career of thriving with cancer, he was a grand model to us all on how to live a life of service to the very end. He will be remembered for being honorable, courageous, humorous, big-hearted, independent and fun-loving. He was a man who made a difference – not only for those around him, but also for the homeless and underprivileged. He will be missed by many, especially his family whom he dearly loved – his mother, Ima Snell; wife, Kim Jones; children, Tina Sheppard and Lisa Jones; and grandchildren, Dillon Sheppard, Christopher Jones and Alisha Jones. To honor John's life of service, donations may be made to: The Imagination Foundation, 1341 South Eliseo Drive, #350, Greenbrae, CA 94904 (supporting research and education in mind/body healing) ; Fountain Project Foundation, 10124 San Pablo Ave., El Cerrito, CA 94530 (providing integrative medical care for those without insurance) ; Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 820 B Street, San Rafael, CA 94901 (offering meals to the homeless) . A private memorial service will be held to celebrate his life.
